The Way I See It #76
The irony of commitment is that it’s deeply liberating - in work, in play, in love. The act frees you from the tyranny of your inner critic, from the fear that likes to dress itself up and parade around as rational hesitation. To commit is to remove your head at the barrier to your life.

Just rediscovered this quote. I forgot how much I loved the little bits of wisdom they...

Classes resume tomorrow. Remind me of this later, when I’m complaining about how much work I have to do. ;)

Let Go
whisperedverse:
Let go, my love. Free your worried mind. Shed your fetid fears and you will surely find, within my arms’ protective embrace, a space to relax and unwind.

– C. S. Lewis (via sketchmedesire)
This is an interesting take on prayer. I’ve been trying to sort out how I feel about the effectiveness and purpose of prayer for a little while now — there’s so much I like about this statement and a lot that I think is missing. But more on that...

Reblog: Is she dilated?
Doctor: Go see this patient, she's going into active labour. I want you to check if she's dilated or not.
Med Student: Um, okay. I will go check.
Go sees patient, checks the patient's eyes then reports back.
Med Student: Um...I think they both look pretty dilated.
Doctor: ...What do you mean...both?

MSF discusses the issues with “using medical aid as a camouflage for military advantage”. A very real, and very frustrating issue.

MSF provides much needed info about obstetric... →
“Today, on International Women’s Day, another woman will join the some 2 million others suffering from obstetric fistula.
She will labor, perhaps at home and completely alone, for one, two, three days. She will move, she will cry and she will fight, desperately, to deliver her baby. Instead, the soft tissue in her baby’s head will compress her pelvis, causing the tissues to...

Just one more reason why I love coffee. :)
missmd2be:
“People who drink hot tea or coffee are less likely to carry methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in their noses, researchers found.
Drinking either beverage was associated with about a 50% relative reduction in the odds of nasal MRSA carriage, and drinking both was associated…

I can't wait to start 3rd year.. →
yes, I know. I’m still about 330-some days away, but the few clinical experiences I’ve had this summer reminded me of why I so desperately need to have some patient interaction to keep me motivated.
Read this article. It will explain why. :)

Will someone please explain to me..
why the little shopping insert in the Deathly Hallows Part 1 DVD includes the Snatcher’s wand, Professor Slughorn’s wand, and Fleur Delacour’s wand, but DOESN’T include Ron’s?? Wtf, man. I suddenly hate Warner Bros.

Just in case you were wondering..
“Spiral staircases in medieval castles are running clockwise. This is because all knights used to be right-handed. When the intruding army would climb the stairs they would not be able to use their right hand which was holding the sword because of the difficulties of climbing the stairs. Left-handed knights would have had no troubles, except left-handed people could never become knights...
I couldn't resist any longer..
A few of my friends have mentioned it to me, and they’ve met some interesting people, so I decided to get on OKcupid today.
It’s both intriguing and strange. Hopefully I’ll get a few good stories out of it, anyway. I’ll keep you posted ;)

I have absolutely nothing to be anxious about..
So why is my stomach all in knots?
It’s been like this for nearly 2 weeks now. My stomach is upset, my heart is racing, and when something startles me, I nearly fly across the room. Seriously starting to hate my sympathetic nervous system.
Fuck fight or flight. I just want to go to sleep.

One of my favorite words, even if its meaning is a bit depressing.
thanatesque:
In psychology and psychiatry, anhedonia ( /ˌænhiˈdoʊniə/ an-hee-doh-nee-ə; Greek: ἀν- an-, “without” + ἡδονή hēdonē, “pleasure”) is defined as the inability to experience pleasure from activities formerly found enjoyable, e.g. hobbies,…
In Defense of Antidepressants →
From another point of view..
matthallock:
Sunday Review may have redeemed itself on this one. The supposition that psychoactive drugs are without efficacy is a dangerous one. Anti-depressants save lives, and in less extreme cases, allow otherwise diffident individuals to lead normal lives.

This essay doesn’t really concern me, but it does concern how I’m coming to understand the field that I am choosing to enter. I welcome opinions! Also, I am so glad to be back to writing - I missed essaying when I was cutting. My pen was mute then, except for the romanticized pieces about self…

MY LIFE AS A MED STUDENT: help-seeking and med... →
LOVE this. It’s so important to take care of yourself while in med school. Admitting you need a respite every once and a while doesn’t make you weak. Getting a B on an exam (or even in a course) won’t make you a bad doctor. Poor mental health will.
If you’re a med student or hoping to be one in the near future, read this please. You’ll be better for it.

As much as I love Harry Potter, this girl has a point. Let’s keep perspective people. :)
mohandasgandhi:
I’m not trying to guilt-trip anyone. I’m really not… but I and others have been talking about these types of crises for years and there’s always some sort of a distraction or an excuse. Harry Potter has little do with it.
The thing is, what’s going on in Somalia and West Africa is...
